Demopolis Says Goodbye to a Local Legend: The Demopolis Times Closes Its Doors

After a whopping 137 years, The Demopolis Times has officially called it a day. That's right, the newspaper that's been the voice of Marengo County since the 1800s has published its final edition. Say it ain't so!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

The Times, started back in 1887 by C.A. Berbeck, has seen a lot of changes over the years. We're talking about a roster of awesome owners like Edward S. Cornish, Ben and Libba George, Hollis Curl, and Jim McKay. Then, in '79, Boone Newspapers Inc., led by James B. Boone, Jr., took the reins.

A New Chapter, Cut Short

The Boone family ran things until just recently, when JM Media Group, LLC, helmed by Jeff and Michelle Schumacher (with a combined 45 years of newspaper experience!), stepped in. They bought the Times, along with a few other Alabama papers, on May 1, 2025. Sadly, their time at the helm was brief.

From Daily to Weekly, to Gone

The Times used to hit the streets daily, but like many papers, it eventually went weekly, landing in mailboxes every Wednesday. Even with the change, the paper scooped up awards from the Alabama Press Association and was a big supporter of local arts and community events.

Part of a Bigger Story

The closure comes as the newspaper industry faces some tough times. Remember when the Birmingham News, Huntsville Times, and Mobile’s Press-Register stopped printing and went all-digital? The Demopolis Times is another reminder of this shift.

A Legacy of Local News

So, with its final edition hitting newsstands, The Demopolis Times leaves behind a major legacy. Here's to 137 years of keeping Demopolis informed and connected. You'll be missed!

Pendergrass Throws Hat in the Ring for State Auditor!

Get ready, folks! Josh Pendergrass, a man of many talents – attorney, pastor, and former communications guru for Governor Kay Ivey – is officially in the race for Alabama State Auditor. He's campaigning hard on a platform of holding government accountable, responsible spending, and good ol' conservative values.

A Legal Eagle with Alabama Roots

Pendergrass isn't new to serving the people. As founder of the Pendergrass Law Firm since '11, he’s got over a decade of legal smarts under his belt. He’s tackled everything from family and juvenile law to church matters and estate planning. Plus, he’s been contract juvenile counsel for the state, helping those who need it most.

More Than Just a Lawyer

But wait, there's more! Pendergrass has also served as a pastor, nurturing congregations and growing youth outreach across Alabama. His campaign says he's all about strengthening families and communities.

From Governor's Office to Campaign Trail

He even held the Communications Director gig for Governor Ivey, shaping the message and helping drive the state's policy. He says his experience working on state and local campaigns has given him insight into what everyday Alabamians really care about.

Putting Alabama First!

Pendergrass's key promises include government transparency, rock-solid voter integrity, and a "Put Alabama First" attitude. He’s also a big supporter of President Trump's policies, aiming to keep that agenda moving right here in Alabama.

Born and Bred Alabama

With degrees from Lambuth University, Jones School of Law, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Pendergrass is a first-generation college grad who credits his upbringing with his strong work ethic and dedication to the community. He and his wife, Leslie Brown, are raising their family right here in Alabama.

Dog Deer Hunting Regs Get an Update!

Heads up, ChumCity! Some tweaks are coming to dog deer hunting regulations, specifically aimed at ironing out conflicts, particularly around the Talladega National Forest.

New Rules of the Game

The Alabama Conservation Advisory Board just gave Conservation Enforcement Officers (aka the good guys at ADCNR) a new tool to keep things fair in the woods. Last week, they unanimously passed an amendment to the existing dog deer hunting rules.

What's Changing?

Basically, you need written permission from landowners before letting your dogs romp on their property. This can be a paper copy, email, text, or some other electronic form, and you gotta have it on you when you're out there. A first slip-up gets a warning, but repeat offenders might face citations. Plus, messing with a dog's GPS or training collar without the owner's say-so is a no-go.

Why the Change?

According to Conservation Commissioner Chris Blankenship, complaints about dogs wandering onto private land have been a recurring issue. While things have improved drastically over the years, some landowners, especially around the Talladega National Forest, were still facing problems. This new rule gives officers a way to address the remaining issues without penalizing responsible dog deer hunters.

Other Big News from the Board

  • Deer Bag Limits: The unantlered deer daily bag limit is now two per day in all zones (except Zone C) for the entire season. The antlered deer limit remains at three.
  • Marine Resources: Several changes were approved, including adjustments to redfish, sheepshead, and flounder regulations. A bag and size limit for common snook was established, and commercial shark anglers have been granted some allowances.
  • Outdoor Recreation: The ADCNR is dropping some serious coin (over $406 million!) on outdoor recreation projects statewide.

Red Snapper Success

Commissioner Blankenship also shared that the red snapper season opening weekend was a hit!

Shout out to David Rainer for keeping us updated on all things outdoors in Alabama!

Etowah County Local Jesse Battles Challenges Senator Andrew Jones in 2026!

Get ready for a showdown in the Alabama State Senate! Lifelong Etowah County resident, local business owner, and farmer Jesse Battles has thrown his hat in the ring, announcing his bid to unseat incumbent Senator Andrew Jones in the 2026 Republican primary.

"Answering the Call"

Battles, sharing the news on Facebook, said he felt encouraged by locals to run. "I’ve listened, and I’m ready to answer that call," he declared, after hearing concerns about current representation.

Platform Priorities

Battles, a self-described conservative, is campaigning on "Alabama values," focusing on social issues, education reform, veterans’ support, and economic development. He's not a fan of Critical Race Theory (CRT) or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and is firmly in President Trump's corner.

Taking Aim at Jones's Record

Battles doesn’t hold back! He criticizes Jones’s legislative record, claiming the incumbent supported bills that hurt local businesses, veterans, and essential local services. Battles alleges Jones targeted a local employer and centralized veteran representation decisions in Montgomery, plus pushed revenue changes without offsetting potential public safety funding losses. Ouch!

Battles's Vision for Alabama

Battles is talking policy! He promises to team up with local officials to attract new industries, invest in infrastructure like extending I-759 and building a new Southside Bridge, and support local agriculture and law enforcement. Tackling inflation and trade issues affecting farmers and consumers is also high on his list.

Background and Community Involvement

Battles is no stranger to public service, having worked with the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office. He's currently on the Gadsden-Etowah Industrial Development Authority Board and leads the Gadsden Rotary Club. A Gadsden State Community College and Jacksonville State University grad (where he founded a College Republican chapter!), Battles is deeply rooted in the community.

"Leadership Back Home"

"This isn’t about politics – it’s about people," Battles said. "Let’s bring leadership back home."

Mark your calendars! The Alabama Republican primary for State Senate District 10 is scheduled for May 19, 2026. It's gonna be a battle!

Pate Lands Key Endorsement in Lt. Governor Race

Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate's campaign for Lieutenant Governor just got a major boost! He snagged the endorsement of the Alabama Grocers Association, a powerful group representing over 850 stores across the state.

Grocers Association Shows Support

"Commissioner Pate gets the grocery game," said Ellie Taylor, President of the Alabama Grocers Association, highlighting his understanding of the industry's vital role in Alabama's economy. She emphasized their confidence in his continued partnership to boost businesses statewide.

Pate Praises Partnership

Pate was stoked about the endorsement. "Honored to have the Alabama Grocers Association on board!" he declared, emphasizing their shared commitment to promoting local food and businesses. He also pointed to their work together in streamlining regulations and championing food safety.

Grocery Industry: A Big Deal for Alabama

The Alabama Grocers Association emphasizes just how important the grocery biz is. They claim the industry pumps over $18 billion into Alabama's economy annually, supports a whopping 188,000 jobs, and contributes over $1.5 billion in state taxes!

The Race is On!

Pate's heading into a Republican primary showdown, likely facing current Secretary of State Wes Allen and Nicole Wadsworth. There's even buzz that Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl might jump into the mix. Mark your calendars: the primary's set for May 19, 2026!

More Than Just Fishing

Chris Blankenship, Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, says it's all about making the lake a fun spot for everyone.

"These improvements... will certainly improve the experience of those who fish at the lake, the walking trails, birding tower, archery range, meeting facility and other amenities will make this a special place for all residents of this area.”

Community Love

Folks like Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed, State Rep. Matt Woods, and Jasper City Council member Jenny Brown Short are totally on board.

Woods gushed, "I am excited about the future of Walker County Lake! The new facilities will include a great space to host meetings and events that can benefit everyone in our community.”

Years in the Making

Short highlighted the local love that fueled this project.

Alabama REALTORS®: Building Communities, One Home at a Time

The Alabama Association of REALTORS® (AAR) is made up of real estate pros who are all about serving homebuyers and sellers across the state. But it's more than just transactions – these REALTORS® are invested in the people and communities they serve, helping clients feel confident and informed when making perhaps the biggest decision of their lives: buying a home! Even in a wild housing market, Alabama REALTORS® are dedicated to strengthening our state and enriching the lives of Alabamians, no matter what.

Local REALTORS®: Community Champions

Alabama REALTOR® Karol Kirby is super committed to her community, seeing her job as a way to empower and support it.

"We want to help neighbors find housing, and we also want to see our community thrive," says Kirby.

REALTOR® Rusty Glines, who's been slinging real estate in Guntersville and Marshall County for over a decade, totally agrees.

"Guntersville is home. I grew up here, graduated here, and now I get to give back by helping others put down roots," Glines says. "That connection matters. You build trust when people know you're invested in the same place they are."

By The Numbers: Alabama's Housing Market

Last year brought its challenges to Alabama's real estate scene. However, residential sales still reached $14.5 billion, showing the housing market's strength. The median home sales price ticked up slightly by 0.4% to $216,744. Inventory expanded too, hitting an average of 16,959 active listings – the highest in five years! However, foreclosures did rise by 6.1%, reaching 5,524 filings.

Even with market uncertainty, Alabama's housing market showed resilience and long-term health. The state's economy grew by 4.5% in the third quarter, beating the national average and adding almost 40,000 jobs, proving real estate's key role in statewide prosperity.

More Than Just Numbers: Real Estate's Real Impact

Behind the stats is the real story: real estate boosts community development and enriches lives. Each home sold in Alabama generates about $95,700 in economic impact, supporting everyone from builders and inspectors to furniture stores and local businesses. But the real magic is how it connects people to their community.

Karol Kirby sees this every day.

"Being an Auburn native, I have seen homeownership in our area creates a thriving community and school system," Kirby shares. "Part of our property taxes go directly to our schools, and it helps us have some of the best in the state. This revolving effect has created an area so desirable that we are outgrowing our city."

REALTORS®: More Than Just Agents

This community-first attitude is what drives REALTORS® across Alabama. They're not just advisors during the homebuying process – they're volunteers, mentors, and advocates.

"REALTORS® are advocates and servants at heart," Kirby says. "We connect with our communities by being present and looking for areas of need. We volunteer at our schools, our churches, and our local REALTOR® association to support community projects."

Rusty Glines emphasizes that it's about more than just the sale – it's about the people.

"Helping first-time buyers is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job," he says. "There’s nothing like seeing the joy on their faces at closing, knowing I helped them through the entire journey – from showings and offers to approval and signing that final piece of paper."

He adds, "I’ve been incredibly blessed over the past 10 years to help so many buyers and sellers – from excited first-time homeowners to seasoned investors. It’s rewarding to walk people through one of the biggest milestones of their lives.”

Guiding First-Time Homebuyers

This commitment is clear when guiding first-time homebuyers through what can be a daunting process.

"It is an honor and joy to help homebuyers with their first purchase," Kirby says. "This is one of life’s big events. First-time buyers are nervous and excited. We get to help calm them and be the steady ship, and we often become an extended member of the family because we become so personally involved in their life."

Real Estate: A Force for Good in Alabama

Real estate in Alabama is more than just an industry: it's a driving force for community growth and a testament to the strength and resilience of Alabamians, especially when times are tough. From boosting local economies to shaping education, REALTORS® play a vital role in helping Alabama residents not only find homes but build lives.

Mo Brooks Mulls a Possible Comeback?

Former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks is hinting at a possible return to politics! While enjoying retirement and time with his 14 grandkids, he hasn't completely ruled out a run for Alabama's open Senate seat in 2026.

"Possible but Unlikely"

Brooks told 256 Today that jumping into the race to succeed Sen. Tommy Tuberville (who's eyeing the governor's mansion) is "possible but unlikely." So, what would make him dust off his campaign shoes?

Looking for the "Right" Republican

It all boils down to finding a candidate who shares his priorities: debt reduction, free enterprise (over that dreaded socialism!), strong "moral values," and a robust national security strategy. Basically, Brooks wants someone who'll "do the right thing" for the country.

Not a Stepping Stone

Brooks insists he doesn't see the Senate as a personal ambition. He views public service as a "sacrifice," even claiming it cost him and his wife millions during his time in Congress!

A Reluctant Candidate

When pressed if he'd run if no suitable candidate emerges, Brooks admitted, "Well, if necessary, but I’m a hard sell on being necessary."

Waiting and Watching

Brooks, who has faced Senate race setbacks before (remember the Trump endorsement saga?), will be watching closely how current leaders handle the economy, foreign affairs, and the nation's moral compass. Rep. Barry Moore is also rumored to be considering a run, while Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall recently announced his candidacy.

The Clock is Ticking

The party primary election for this open U.S. Senate seat is set for May 19, 2026. Will Brooks throw his hat in the ring? Stay tuned, ChumCity, because this race is heating up!
