Alabama's New Biometric Law: Good or Creepy?

Hold up, ChumCity citizens! Alabama just dropped a new law that's got folks on both sides of the fence. We're talking about Senate Bill 63, which basically means law enforcement HAS to snag fingerprints and DNA samples from undocumented immigrants before they're released. Think Minority Report, but in real life.

What's the Deal?

Governor Kay Ivey and crew are all about this, saying it's gonna make Alabama safer. The idea? Catch the bad guys, especially if they've got a shady past. Senator Lance Bell, who backed the bill, thinks it tightens up some loopholes and keeps tabs on who's interacting with the law.

The Backlash

But not everyone's throwing a party. The ACLU is screaming "civil liberties violation!" They think this new law is creating a surveillance state aimed at immigrants. They're worried about the government hoarding personal info without a solid reason.

Who's Paying for This?

Here's another kicker: the law's gonna be funded by new court fees. So, basically, everyone in Alabama could be chipping in. Critics also point out that ICE is already doing this, so is it just a big waste of money?

The Takeaway

The law is official and kicking, so whether you love it or hate it, it's here. Time will tell if it really keeps Alabama safer or just makes things more complicated. What do you think, ChumCity? Is this a step forward, or a step too far?

Big News for Etowah County's NEAR Megasite!

Etowah County just scored a major win! The Commission snagged a second SEEDS grant, meaning more awesome improvements are coming to the NEAR Megasite's water and sewer setup. This is a huge thumbs-up from the state of Alabama for the county's economic hustle!

What's the Dough For?

This fresh batch of funding, courtesy of the Alabama State Industrial Development Authority (SIDA) through the SEEDS Program, is all about getting the Megasite ready for serious industrial action.

Breaking Down the Dollars

The $3.3 million grant, backed by a $2.5 million local contribution, will fund the final 2.5 miles of a vital water line along Canoe Creek Road. Imagine a 500,000-gallon water tank, nestled under I-59, now connecting to the recently finished water line at Steele Station Road. Boom!

The Commission's Take

"This SEEDS grant is a total game-changer for Etowah County," exclaimed Commission Chairman Joey Statum. "It's another giant leap towards getting the NEAR Megasite ready for jobs, jobs, jobs! We're stoked that the state sees the potential here."

State Support

Governor Ivey’s “Game Plan” recognizes the critical need for top-notch industrial sites. Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, added that this is a "strategic investment in the future" of the Megasite, unlocking its potential for growth and job creation. With its "prime location and strong infrastructure", the NEAR Megasite is set to attract awesome projects, benefiting the entire state.

Even More Goodies

Adding to the excitement, the Commission also awarded a $3.8 million construction bid for the water project's final phase, and a sewer line extension.

Commissioner Inzer's Enthusiasm

"We can finally fill the tank!" shared Commissioner Craig Inzer Jr., a major force behind this project. "Now it’s just a matter of finding the right industry for the site and for Etowah County.”

President Trump and China's Xi Jinping chatted for 90 minutes, hashing out trade beefs and hinting at meet-ups to cool things down. Let's hope they order good takeout!

USA Today Under Fire

USA Today caught heat from the White House and conservatives for its coverage of the Boulder terror suspect's family. Critics say the outlet gave them the benefit of the doubt in a way they never would for right-wing perpetrators.

Senator Britt Sounds Alarm

Senator Katie Britt is speaking out against the rise in antisemitic violence, including that Boulder attack. She's urging everyone in Alabama and across the country to stand up against hate.

Huntsville Heated Up

Progressive groups are planning to crash a Moms for Liberty event featuring Marjorie Taylor Greene in Huntsville. Looks like the left is fired up about Greene's presence after she backed out of Trumps 'Big, Beautiful Bill'

Tuberville Tussles with Dems

Tommy Tuberville is brushing off those pesky Florida residency rumors, focusing on his 2026 gubernatorial bid in Alabama. He's even inviting liberals to bring their A-game!

"Big, Beautiful Bill" Blues?

Tuberville also thinks Trump’s "Big, Beautiful Bill" could hurt Alabama with potential food stamp cuts, leaving the state footing the bill. But he's still down for some overall spending cuts. Sounds like he's got mixed feelings!

Trump vs. Musk

Trump and Elon Musk are beefing, and it all started because Musk hates Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill." Their relationship went south fast!

Alabama REALTORS®: Building Communities, One Home at a Time

The Alabama Association of REALTORS® (AAR) is a team of pros dedicated to helping folks buy and sell homes across the state. But it's more than just transactions. These REALTORS® are invested in the communities they serve, helping clients navigate the sometimes-tricky world of home buying.

Committed to Community

Alabama REALTOR® Karol Kirby believes her job is all about empowering and supporting the community. "We want to help neighbors find housing, and we also want to see our community thrive," she says, emphasizing the impact of homeownership.

REALTOR® Rusty Glines, a decade-long veteran in Guntersville, agrees. "Guntersville is home. I grew up here...and now I get to give back by helping others put down roots," Glines shares. "That connection matters. You build trust when people know you’re invested in the same place they are."

A Look at the Numbers

Even with some challenges last year, Alabama's real estate industry showed strength. Residential sales reached $14.5 billion, with a slight increase in the median home sales price to $216,744. Inventory grew, reaching a five-year high.

Despite market ups and downs, Alabama's housing market has shown resilience. The state's economy grew by 4.5% in the third quarter, beating the national average, and added nearly 40,000 jobs, proving real estate's key role in statewide prosperity.

More Than Just Houses

Real estate isn't just about buildings; it's about community development. Every home sold in Alabama adds about $95,700 to the economy, supporting a whole network of pros. But the real magic is how it connects people to a place.

Karol Kirby sees this every day. "Being an Auburn native, I have seen homeownership in our area creates a thriving community and school system," Kirby explains. "Part of our property taxes go directly to our schools... This revolving effect has created an area so desirable that we are outgrowing our city."

Advocates and Servants

This community-first mindset is what drives REALTORS® across Alabama. They're not just advisors; they're volunteers, mentors, and advocates.

"REALTORS® are advocates and servants at heart," Kirby says. "We connect with our communities by being present and looking for areas of need. We volunteer...to support community projects."

Rusty Glines adds that it's about the people. "Helping first-time buyers is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job," he says. "There’s nothing like seeing the joy on their faces at closing, knowing I helped them through the entire journey."

Guiding First-Time Homebuyers

Guiding first-time homebuyers is a big part of what REALTORS® do.

"It is an honor and joy to help homebuyers with their first purchase," Kirby says. "This is one of life’s big events... We get to help calm them and be the steady ship...because we become so personally involved in their life."

Real estate in Alabama is a force for community growth, helping residents not just find houses but build lives, even in tough times.
