Upset in District 95? Incumbent Faces Stiff Challenge!

It's not every day you see big-city mayors openly backing a challenger against a sitting legislator, but that's exactly what's shaking up House District 95! Gulf Shores business owner Joe Freeman is taking on State Rep. Francis Holk-Jones (R-Foley), and he's got some heavy hitters in his corner.

Mayoral Support & ALFA's Backing!

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon is publicly endorsing Freeman, making a splash with his support. But the backing doesn't stop there! Freeman also snagged a major endorsement from the Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA).

What ALFA Says

Hope Cassebaum, president of the Baldwin County Farmers Federation, praised Freeman as a "conservative businessman" who gets the importance of agriculture and business in Baldwin County. Cassebaum believes Freeman will be a strong voice for farmers, business owners, and everyone in District 95.

Freeman's Background

Freeman, a University of South Alabama and Faulkner University alum, brings a diverse background to the table, including 10 years as a Registered Investment Advisor, following a previous career in law enforcement.

Freeman's Reaction

"Having the endorsement of our farmers is a great honor," said Freeman. "We share the same work ethic and common-sense conservative values."

Family & Faith

Freeman and his wife, Mignon, live in Gulf Shores with their six children and are active members of The Island Church in Orange Beach.

ALFA's Power

The Alabama Farmers Federation, with over 360,000 member families, is a force to be reckoned with. Their grassroots approach and county FarmPAC endorsements make them a crucial voice in local elections.

The Road Ahead

Mark your calendars! The Republican primary is set for May 19, 2026. While the district leans heavily Republican, the winner will potentially face a Democrat in November.

Shutdown Standoff: Alabama Senators Fight for Essential Workers' Pay

Alabama Senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt are pushing to ensure essential government employees get paid during the current federal government shutdown.

Dems Block GOP Bill

However, a Republican-backed bill called the Shutdown Fairness Act of 2025, which aimed to pay active-duty military and other essential federal workers, was blocked by Senate Democrats on Thursday. The bill fell short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster, with a final vote of 54-45. Both Tuberville and Britt voted in favor of the measure.

Tuberville's Fiery Reaction

Senator Tuberville didn't mince words after the vote, stating, "Democrats hate our troops, police and ICE officers, air traffic controllers, and their own staff."

Obamacare Subsidy Clash

Republicans have been critical of Democrats' push to expand Obamacare subsidies, arguing that some of that funding could end up covering healthcare costs for individuals who have entered the country illegally.

Britt Highlights Real-World Impact

Senator Britt recently expressed her frustration with the "needless politics" causing the shutdown. "We have people that are really paying the price," she told ABC News. She shared stories from her recent travels across Alabama, where she spoke with furloughed workers and small business owners struggling to cope with the uncertainty. She emphasized the need for Democrats to "open the government" so people can receive their paychecks and vital programs like WIC and food stamps can continue. "There are real issues that are coming to play because of the politics that Democrats are playing," she stated.

Tuberville Grills Mark Cuban on Drug Prices!

Senator Tommy Tuberville took on entrepreneur Mark Cuban in a recent Senate Aging Committee hearing, diving deep into the murky world of prescription drug costs.

Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs: A Game Changer?

Cuban, the Shark Tank star, launched Cost Plus Drugs back in 2022 with the goal of slashing prescription drug prices. Tuberville wanted to know: how will President Trump's new TrumpRx website and direct-to-patient initiatives shake things up?

Surprisingly Pro-Trump?

Cuban's response was surprisingly supportive of TrumpRx. He even called it "incredible" and "stupendous," offering up Cost Plus Drugs' API for price sharing. He also praised TrumpRx's strategy of bypassing traditional Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), which Cuban believes drive up brand-name drug costs. This is a bit of a head-turner, considering Cuban's past support for Kamala Harris.

Transparency is Key

Cuban emphasized the importance of transparent pricing at Cost Plus Drugs, explaining that seeing their 15% markup builds trust with customers. "What we really sell in this industry is trust," he stated.

Surgery Center of Oklahoma: Disrupting Healthcare

Tuberville also questioned Dr. Keith Smith, the Co-Founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma, which is known for its transparent pricing. Smith explained that he started the center because he felt complicit in "a financial crime" working in a traditional hospital setting. He pointed out that patients are willing to travel for quality, affordable care, with half of the Surgery Center's patients coming from outside Oklahoma, even from Europe and Africa.
