Get ready to cheer, ChumCity! Alabama's Community College System (ACCC) is about to receive a major boost for its women's athletics programs. We're talking a whopping $300,000 award in 2025, thanks to special appropriations from the Alabama Education Trust Fund. The goal? To fuel the growth and development of women's sports across the ACCC. State Representative Chris Blackshear played a key role in making this happen, pushing for its inclusion in the budget. ACCC Commissioner Dean Myrick expressed gratitude to Blackshear and the state legislature, recognizing their generous support for female athletics, particularly flag football. The ACCC already boasts a strong lineup of women's sports, including basketball, softball, soccer, cross country, golf, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. And starting this September, get ready for some flag football action! Blackshear highlighted the importance of community colleges in both workforce development and athletics. He emphasized the global rise of flag football, now featured in the Olympics and the NFL Pro Bowl. Inspired by its impact in his hometown, he championed its inclusion in the ACCC. Izell Reese, Executive Director of NFL Flag and a Dothan native, calls women's flag football the fastest-growing sport in the United States. He's thrilled about the new opportunities at the community college level, giving female athletes a path to continue playing after high school.Big Win for Alabama Community College Women's Athletics!
