Big News for Rural Alabama Broadband!

Get ready to celebrate! After almost a decade of hard work, Tombigbee Electric Cooperative is throwing a party this Thursday to mark the completion of over 4,200 miles of fiber optic internet lines. That's right – reliable, high-speed internet is finally here for homes and businesses across eight rural Northwest Alabama counties!

What's the Occasion?

Tombigbee Communications, the cooperative's broadband subsidiary, built the awesome Freedom Fiber network. Expect speeches, celebrations, and a whole lot of community pride.

Who's Showing Up?

Lots of big names are expected to be there. Think top state officials, plus representatives from Senators Tuberville and Britt's offices, and Congressman Aderholt himself! This project clearly has everyone buzzing.

Where and When?

The celebration kicks off from 10-3:30 p.m. at Tombigbee Electric Cooperative headquarters: 3196 County Highway 55 in Hamilton.

Why This Matters

This project means lightning-fast gigabit fiber access for Marion, Lamar, Fayette, and Franklin counties. Plus, many areas west of Smith Lake in Winston County, and even some spots in Walker, Cullman, and Tuscaloosa counties, are now connected. Just a few years ago, modern internet seemed like a distant dream for these communities.

How They Did It

Tombigbee used a smart "first-mile to last-mile" strategy. They tapped into the statewide Alabama Fiber Network and built their own backbone to connect homes and businesses. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Congressman Aderholt's Take

Rep. Aderholt put it perfectly: "Broadband is the electricity of the 21st century." This project is a huge step toward connecting everyone in Alabama. The future is looking bright!

SCOTUS Takes on Voting Rights: Alabama in the Crosshairs!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity citizens! The Supreme Court is diving headfirst into Louisiana v. Callais today, a case with potentially HUGE implications for voting rights and, specifically, Alabama’s redistricting drama.

What's the Buzz?

Callais basically asks: does drawing a second majority-Black district to satisfy the Voting Rights Act actually violate the Constitution's promise of equal protection?

Why Should Alabama Care?

Alabama's currently wrestling with Voting Rights Act lawsuits at every level of government, from local skirmishes to federal showdowns. Legal eagles are saying the Court might use Callais to seriously weaken (or even ditch!) Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Section 2: The Key Player

Section 2 is the very part of the law that's been used to challenge Alabama's maps, arguing they dilute minority votes.

Game Changer?

If the Supremes narrow or eliminate Section 2, it could completely change the playing field for Alabama's ongoing lawsuits at the county, state, and federal levels. Buckle up!

Marques' Campaign Hits Half a Million!

State Rep. Rhett Marques is making waves in the race for Alabama's 1st Congressional District! Just announced: his campaign has already hauled in over $500,000 since launching back in August. That's some serious cheddar!

Local Love Fuels Congressional Bid

Marques, vying for the seat left open by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, says the support is coming from right here in Alabama. "I am grateful for the outpouring of support," Marques exclaimed, emphasizing that most donors are Alabama residents.

Aligning with Republican Heavyweights

Marques believes his message of backing President Trump, Senator Britt, and the entire Republican crew in Congress is clicking with voters statewide.

Big Names Back Marques

His campaign's also snagged endorsements from some pretty influential folks, including U.S. Senator Katie Britt and Speaker of the Alabama House Nathaniel Ledbetter, along with a bunch of other state legislators and the Petroleum and Convenience Marketers Association.

About Rhett Marques

A lifelong Republican with deep roots in Baldwin County, Marques spent over two decades running a small business in Coffee County. Now, he's representing his district in the Alabama House of Representatives.

Mark your calendars: the Republican Primary election is set for May 19, 2026. Get ready to rumble!

ChumCity News Round-Up!

Hey Chumsters, stay in the know with the latest buzz!

Kirk Mania!

It was a big birthday for Turning Point USA's main man, Charlie Kirk! Trump posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom (way to go, Chuck!), a mural popped up in Hanceville to honor the conservative icon, and the State Department is cracking down on anyone celebrating (allegedly) Kirk's demise. Whew, that's a lot!

Young Republican Chat Leak!

Oh boy, leaked chats among Young Republicans are causing a stir. Brace yourself for alleged racist, anti-Semitic, and generally questionable comments. The media is probably gonna jump all over this, claiming it reflects the secret feelings of every conservative. Meanwhile, ABC, CBS, and NBC are catching flak for their (alleged) silence on Virginia Dem AG candidate Jay Jones's text scandal. Biased much?

Jordan Endorses Moore!

Jim Jordan's throwing his weight behind Barry Moore for Alabama's open Senate seat. He's praising Moore's conservative cred and leadership on issues like border security and election integrity. Will it be enough to give Moore the win?

Mobile Gets Massive Upgrade!

Alabama's celebrating a major milestone: the completion of the Mobile Ship Channel expansion! This $350 million project makes the Port of Mobile the deepest container port on the Gulf Coast. Get ready for some serious economic boom!

Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Update!

The Trump-brokered ceasefire is holding strong, entering its fifth day. All living hostages are free, and remains of four have been returned. However, squabbles over returning all remains, Israel's scaling back of aid, and accusations of Hamas actions against Palestinians continue.

Cities Declare Emergency!

Chicago and LA are bracing for anticipated ICE raids under Trump's mass deportation plans. Chicago's limiting cooperation with federal agents, while LA County's tossing $2.5 million towards legal aid and shelter for those folks affected.

Shutdown Showdown and "No Kings" Protests!

The government shutdown rolls on, now in its 14th day. Republicans are pinning the blame on the nationwide "No Kings" protests set for Saturday. Events are planned in 12 Alabama cities, organized by groups like Indivisible, all to rally against President Trump's policies.

Mobile's Moment: New Era Dawns at Deepened Port!

Big news for Alabama! State and federal honchos celebrated the grand opening of the Port of Mobile's brand spankin' new 50-foot ship channel. Talk about a game-changer! The ribbon-cutting (or should we say, wave-making?) happened on Columbus Day, a symbolic nod to the history of shipping in the Americas.

Deeper Than Ever!

After a $366 million facelift, the Port of Mobile is now the deepest channel on the Gulf Coast. This means it can finally welcome those massive container ships – the big boys of the shipping world! The first ship with a 48.5-foot draft already cruised through the channel last Friday, putting the new waterway to work right away.

Saluting the "Father of the Port"

All eyes were on former U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, affectionately dubbed the "father of the port deepening." Shelby, who served Alabama from 1987 to 2023, had the vision and drive to make this happen.

From Singapore to Mobile: A Vision Takes Shape

Shelby recounted how a trip to Singapore inspired him. Seeing how a deepened port boosted Singapore's economy, he brought the idea back to Alabama. Despite initial concerns about the hefty price tag, Shelby made port deepening his top priority.

Kudos All Around!

Current and former officials showered Shelby with praise, crediting him with both conceiving the project and securing the necessary funds.

What They're Saying:

  • Senator Tommy Tuberville: "This project...is a massive win...proud to have the deepest container port in the Gulf..."
  • Senator Katie Britt: "Growing good-paying jobs, opening new channels for commerce..."
  • Former Senator Richard Shelby: "Driving growth at Alabama's Port has always been key..."
  • U.S. Rep. Barry Moore: "... a game-changer for trade, commerce, and jobs..."
  • U.S. Rep. Dale Strong: "This investment...strengthens Alabama's position on the global stage..."
  • U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures: "...creating more jobs, investments, and opportunities..."
  • Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson: "A transformational milestone...supports industries far beyond the waterfront..."

The Future is Bright (and Deep!)

The ceremony's theme? The continued growth of the port, benefiting all of Alabama. Could "Port of Alabama" be the new name on everyone's lips? Stay tuned, ChumCity peeps!

Fairhope Bids Farewell to a Legend: Mayor James P. Nix

A significant chapter in Fairhope's history closed this week with the passing of retired Mayor James P. Nix at 88. He leaves behind a legacy etched into the very fabric of this beloved Alabama town.

A Quarter-Century of Service

Nix dedicated 28 years of his life, from 1972 to 2000, to serving as Fairhope's Mayor – a true millennial mayor! Before taking the helm, he served on the city council from 1968. Fairhope City Council President Jack Burrell noted, "Fairhope, Alabama would not be known the world over for its beauty and charm without the vision and leadership of Mayor Jim Nix."

From Nixon to Clinton

Think about it: Mayor Nix's tenure spanned the presidencies of Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, and Clinton! He navigated Fairhope through decades of change and growth.

"The Squire of Fairhope"

Did you know there's a movie about him? "The Squire of Fairhope" chronicles Nix's efforts to transform the town, tackling issues like raw sewage in Mobile Bay and unreliable utilities. He tackled those problems head-on, paving the way for Fairhope's current success.

A Visionary Leader

Assistant Professor Delaware Arif from the University of North Alabama stated, "Definitely, Mayor Nix deserves a lot of credit for turning a small plain town with dirt roads into a model for beautification and calm/quiet community." He saw Fairhope's potential decades ago and worked tirelessly to realize it.

Honoring His Memory

Services for Nix will be held Saturday, October 18, at the Nix Senior Center, One Bayou Drive, Fairhope. Visitation begins at 100 a.m., with the funeral at 120 p.m. Let's celebrate the life of a man who truly shaped Fairhope into the gem it is today.

Healthcare SOS in Rural Alabama

Brainpower and Dollars

The foundation's board is packed with heavy hitters from Alabama's top health systems, plus business and economic development gurus. They'll use their combined knowledge to get private money flowing to the hospitals and projects that need it most.

Modernizing and Retaining Talent

Beyond keeping emergency rooms open, the foundation wants to help rural hospitals modernize, attract and keep talented doctors and nurses, expand outpatient services, and work more closely with local businesses and schools. It's all about building stronger, healthier communities!

Priceville Officer Reinstated After Fatal Pursuit

Hold the phone, ChumCity citizens! The Priceville City Council just flipped the script on a controversial case. Remember Officer Garry Chapman, the one involved in that high-speed chase that ended in tragedy last month? Well, he's back!

The council voted to reinstate Chapman after a lengthy closed-door session Monday night. It was a unanimous decision, folks! Instead of being fired, Chapman's now facing a 10-day suspension without pay. Mayor Sam Heflin took a seat for this one, recusing himself from the vote.

Dog the Bounty Hunter Weighs In!

Things got real when the public was invited to comment. Turns out, opinions were split! And guess who showed up to speak? None other than Duane Lee Chapman, a.k.a. "Dog the Bounty Hunter," Officer Chapman's dad! Talk about a dramatic twist!

What Happened?

Quick recap: Officer Chapman was initially canned after a disciplinary hearing found he broke department policy during that fateful chase on September 6th. He was pursuing Archie Brandon Hale, 40, for suspected DUI and traffic violations when Hale allegedly sped off.

The chase ended horribly at Highway 36 and U.S. 31 in Hartselle. Hale's vehicle collided with another car, tragically killing 17-year-old Tristan Hollis and injuring others. Hale's been charged with reckless murder but, of course, is innocent until proven guilty.

The Aftermath

An internal investigation determined Chapman was tearing through downtown Hartselle at nearly 100 mph, even though he admitted he wasn't familiar with the area! City officials felt he didn't properly assess the risks of the chase.

And get this: Before his reinstatement, Chapman reportedly filed a $10 million wrongful termination claim against the city! Drama, drama, drama!

What's Next?

Hale is still locked up without bond at the Morgan County Jail. As for Officer Chapman, he's got a suspension to serve, but he's back on the force. What do you Chums think of this decision? Let us know in the comments!
