State Rep. Jamie Kiel (R-Russellville) is bummed that a religious liberty bill for Alabama public schools hit a roadblock in the Legislature recently. The bill, championed by State Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover) and State Sen. Shay Shelnut (R-Trussville), couldn't make it past the State House Government Committee last week. Kiel, a supporter of the bill in committee, recently shared his frustrations on WVNN's "The Yaffee Program." "This is elective," Kiel emphasized. "No one's forcing anyone to participate. If they'd rather stick to core or elective courses at school, they can. So, I don't get the fuss about transporting kids. Plus, no taxpayer money is involved, making it totally constitutional. And most importantly, parents deserve a say in their children's education!" Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth is squarely backing the bill, pinning its failure on lawmakers swayed by lobby groups like the School Superintendents of Alabama and the Alabama Association of School Boards. Ainsworth believes these lawmakers "should be ashamed." Kiel wholeheartedly agrees with Ainsworth. "Kids leave campus all the time for various activities," Kiel stated, citing vocational school as an example. "They miss class time, but they get the electives they want." He also suggested some schools are pushing back against the state's involvement. "I think they just don't want to be told what to do," he said, highlighting that schools already have the option to incorporate these curricula. Kiel views the bill's failure as a setback for parental choice and student opportunities. "Our schools are fantastic, but they can't offer the same religious classes as private schools," he pointed out. "This would level the playing field, giving public schools a chance to compete with private schools offering Bible classes.
