Library of Congress Drama: Congressional Reps Demand Investigation!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity citizens! Things are getting wild at the Library of Congress. Following the sudden dismissal of the Librarian, a posse of Congress members, including our very own U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, is calling for a serious investigation.

What's the Fuss?

They're concerned about possible shady communications between the Library and the White House. Are things getting a little too cozy between the legislative and executive branches?

DOJ Standoff?!

But wait, there's more! Monday saw a brief standoff at the Library, with staff reportedly refusing entry to Justice Department officials claiming they were in charge. Library officials stood their ground, and the DOJ folks eventually left. Capitol Police were even called but were told they weren't needed. Talk about a page-turner!

Sewell and Crew Demand Answers

Rep. Sewell and other concerned lawmakers, including Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle, have formally requested an investigation by the Library of Congress Inspector General. They want to know if there's been any unauthorized transfer of congressional or Library data to the executive branch.

"Inappropriate Requests for Information"

The lawmakers stated that the Librarian's firing "raises serious concerns" about the executive branch targeting the Library with adverse actions and "inappropriate requests for information." They emphasized that the Library is an independent part of the legislative branch, and the executive branch has "no authority" to demand confidential legislative data.

What Exactly Are They Investigating?

The IG's Office is being asked to look into:

  • Requests or attempts by the executive branch to access Library data, including communications between the Congressional Research Service and congressional offices.
  • Directives to Library staff from the executive branch to change access protocols or information-sharing practices.
  • Attempts by executive branch officials to bypass normal communication channels.
  • Any other potentially illegal or inappropriate actions by the executive branch.

"Time-Sensitive Matter"

The request emphasizes the urgency of the situation, noting the potential for "irreparable harm" to a vital institution. Looks like this story is far from over!
