Fresh Faces at the Alabama Farmers Federation!

The Alabama Farmers Federation just got a double dose of Auburn University awesomeness! Two bright and shiny College of Agriculture seniors, Cohen Luker and Jonathan Parten, hopped on board as summer interns May 20th. Get ready for some grassroots magic as they dive into policy development and legislative affairs!

Cohen Luker: Talladega Roots, Statewide Reach

Hailing from Talladega County, Cohen will be flexing his agricultural muscles with the Governmental & Agricultural Programs (GAP) Department. He'll be helping commodity directors prep for the big Farm & Land Conference. Director Mitt Walker is stoked to have Cohen's experience. "His farm experiences will be key for a successful summer," Walker said. Cohen's been knee-deep in his family's row crop operation since 2010 and is juggling ag business and economics with a minor in crop and soil sciences at AU. This guy's got passion! He's ready to learn about Alabama's diverse commodities and meet the folks behind the scenes. "Alfa is a big family, and I am proud to be part of it,” Cohen said.

Jonathan Parten: Lee County Leader, Legislative Learner

Lee County's own Jonathan Parten is joining the Federation’s External Affairs and Organization departments. This AU leader is bringing his legislative knowledge to the table. Brian Hardin, Federation External Affairs Department Director, is pumped to have him. "As the AU College of Agriculture president, Jonathan understands the importance of advocating for Alabama agriculture," Hardin said. Jonathan’s diving headfirst into ag policy, an area he's passionate about. "I’m excited to see how I can play a positive role in the organization this summer,” he said.

The Future is Bright!

Federation and Alfa President Jimmy Parnell knows these two are the real deal. "Real-world experience is a key component to a student’s success,” Parnell said. He hopes they'll forge lasting connections with Alabama farmers and industry leaders. Welcome aboard, Cohen and Jonathan!

ABC of Alabama Prioritizes Construction Worker Safety

With construction site fatalities hitting over 1,000 last year, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Alabama isn't taking any chances. They're doubling down on hands-on training and emergency readiness to keep workers safe.

Realistic Training for Real-World Scenarios

ABC of Alabama teamed up with the University of Alabama, Harrison Construction, and local emergency responders for a gripping simulated structural collapse right on campus. The goal? Sharpen response skills and boost safety protocols.

Simulating the Chaos

The exercise was designed to feel like the real deal, complete with a wobbly elevated platform built from scaffold bases, aluminum beams, and plywood to mimic a concrete floor. Plus, they threw in a simulated gas leak (using compressed air and water) to crank up the tension!

Actors Added Authenticity

Live actors played the roles of injured workers and pesky media reps, creating a complete emergency response scenario – from medical aid to crisis communication.

"Safety is Paramount"

Tim Harrison, President of Harrison Construction and Chairman of the ABC Board, nailed it: "Safety is paramount... Our employees' families deserve their loved ones home each night." He stressed that this collaborative event strengthens safety awareness across the board.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

ABC of Alabama President Jay Reed emphasized the power of teamwork, stating, "Ensuring that construction workers get home to their families every night is the most important thing we do." He applauded the collaboration with UA, Harrison Construction, and local emergency crews.
