Another Arrest in Downtown Montgomery Shooting

Folks, another suspect is in custody following that horrific mass shooting downtown on October 4th. Remember that awful night? Two lives lost and a dozen injured.

Javorick Whiting in Custody

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency snagged 19-year-old Javorick Whiting on Thursday. He's facing some serious heat with an attempted murder charge and is currently chilling at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

Previous Arrests

This makes suspect number three! Dantavious McGhee, also 19, was cuffed earlier this week. He's got a laundry list of charges including capital murder, first-degree assault (times nine!), and three counts of second-degree assault. Yikes.

And remember that juvenile? He was arrested on October 10th and is facing the SAME charges as McGhee. Police are keeping his name and age under wraps for now.

Remembering the Victims

Let's not forget Shalanda Williams, 43, and Jeremiah Morris, 17, who tragically lost their lives. Twelve others were injured, many of them young people, with the youngest being only 16. Initially, five were fighting for their lives.

Got Info?

If you know ANYTHING about this case, please, please, PLEASE step forward. You can contact CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP, the Secret Witness Line at 334-625-4000, or Montgomery Police at 334-625-2831. Help bring justice to these victims and their families!

Gridiron Glory: Southern College Football Heats Up!

Get ready for a jam-packed Saturday of college football action across the South! Big games are brewing both inside and outside the Yellowhammer State.

Alabama and Auburn Face Crucial Tests

The Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers are staring down pivotal, prove-it games. Alabama clashes with Tennessee in the always-heated Third Saturday in October rivalry, where bragging rights (and maybe a cigar) are on the line. Meanwhile, Auburn's head coach is feeling the heat as they host Missouri in a must-win showdown.

Beyond the State Lines: Must-See SEC Matchups

But the excitement doesn't stop there! Here are three non-Alabama or Auburn games you absolutely need to keep your eyes on:

LSU @ Vanderbilt

110 a.m. CST

Imagine being told five years ago that Vandy would be favored over LSU! Well, times have changed. While LSU has stumbled a bit recently, the fact that this is a major game speaks volumes about what Coach Lea is building at Vanderbilt. The Commodores are favored by a hair, and both teams are desperate to avoid a second loss and stay in the playoff conversation.

Oklahoma @ South Carolina

11:45 a.m. CST

After a shocking loss to Texas, the Sooners are hungry to bounce back. They'll be facing a South Carolina team that relies heavily on the arm of LaNorris Sellers. The Gamecocks, fresh off a competitive loss to LSU, are looking to pull off the upset at home.

Ole Miss @ Georgia

2:30 p.m. CST

Ole Miss narrowly avoided disaster against Washington State and is looking to stay undefeated. A win in Athens would catapult them towards their first SEC Championship appearance and a potential playoff berth. But Georgia, looking to avoid a second loss, stands in their way. Expect Lane Kiffin to bring the heat against his old pal Kirby Smart!

It's shaping up to be another incredible weekend of college football down South!

Tide vs. Vols: Third Saturday in October Heats Up!

The Third Saturday in October is back, and this year's Alabama vs. Tennessee clash is shaping up to be an absolute barnburner! Tuscaloosa is buzzing with anticipation.

DeBoer's Revenge?

Coach Kalen DeBoer is hungry for redemption after last year's defeat in Knoxville, and he's aiming for that sweet, celebratory cigar. Plus, it's the Tide's fourth consecutive ranked opponent – can they keep the momentum rolling?

Simpson's Time to Shine

With quarterback Ty Simpson lighting up the field and firmly in the national conversation, DeBoer has to feel good about Bama's chances. And for Simpson, a Tennessee native, this game is personal.

A Childhood Dream Realized

Simpson's been dreaming of this game since he was a kid, watching it every year. After waiting patiently on the bench, the gunslinger finally gets his shot against his home-state team.

"This is What College Football is All About"

"I’m very excited," Simpson said. "I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a little kid... This is what college football is all about, this is what SEC football is all about."

Get ready for a showdown under the lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium! If Simpson keeps playing like he has been, he's got a great shot at earning that victory cigar.

Remembering Shorty Price: Alabama's Most Colorful Candidate

It's Governor's race season here in Alabama, and that always brings back memories of the one and only Shorty Price!

The "Run for the Fun of It" Days

Back in the day, Alabama elections were spiced up by a bunch of candidates who knew they couldn't win, but ran anyway just to make things interesting. And Shorty Price? He was the king of that crew!

Shorty vs. Wallace: A Barbour County Rivalry

William Ralph "Shorty" Price hailed from Barbour County, just like the legendary George Wallace. They even shared a town, Clio, and briefly roomed together at the University of Alabama! But Shorty harbored a serious dislike for Wallace, maybe because Wallace was a political success while Shorty... wasn't. He ran against Wallace every chance he got, and didn't hold back with his criticisms.

A Perennial Candidate with a Passion for Budweiser

Shorty ran for Governor every four years, and for pretty much every other office you could think of! He was a short guy, hence the nickname, and often reused old campaign signs to save a buck. He rarely got more than 2% of the vote, but he kept at it.

"Smoke Tampa Nugget Cigars, drink Budweiser beer, and vote for Shorty Price for Governor."

Shorty spent his non-election years traveling the state, asking for "contributions" that magically transformed into cans of Budweiser. He was always cheerfully tipsy and proud of it. One of his campaign promises was to shorten the Governor's term to two years, figuring that "If you can’t steal enough to last you the rest of your life in two years, you ain’t got enough sense to have the office in the first place."

A Crimson Tide Superfan

Shorty loved Alabama football more than anything. You could always spot him at Crimson Tide games, decked out in his Alabama tie and flag, and, of course, thoroughly enjoying himself. He'd mingle with the cheerleaders, enthusiastically "helping" with the cheers. He idolized Bear Bryant and shared Bryant's intense dislike for Tennessee.

Shorty's Legacy

Sadly, Shorty passed away in a car accident about 35 years ago, probably with a Budweiser in hand. This week’s Alabama vs. Tennessee game made me think of ole Shorty. If he were still here, you can bet he'd be at Bryant-Denny Stadium in top form! We miss you, Shorty!

Lake Guntersville Crowned Bass Fishing Royalty!

Hold on to your hats, Chumsters! Lake Guntersville lived up to the hype last week, hosting the Ultimate Angler Championship and proving once and for all it's THE place to be for serious bass fishing. Top anglers from every corner of the nation descended on this Alabama gem, and let's just say, they were hooked (pun intended!).

A Tournament Like No Other

This wasn't your average fishing tourney. Three years in the making, the Ultimate Angler Championship brought together pros from every league imaginable for an epic showdown. Unified Pros, the anglers' charity arm, partnered with state legislators and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) to make it happen. The prize? A whopping $1.3 million purse, with a cool $500,000 going to the lucky angler who reeled in the win – Alabama's very own Tucker Smith!

Guntersville Shines in the Spotlight

The goal was simple: put Guntersville on the map as a premier bass fishing destination. And boy, did they succeed! With support from the City of Scottsboro, Jackson County, and the Alabama State Legislature, the tournament at Goose Pond Resort was a smash hit. Anglers raved about the format, the competition, and, of course, the unbelievable fishing. We're talking 52 pounds leading after just two days! That's Guntersville for ya.

More Than Just Fishing

The Ultimate EXPO offered attendees all kinds of goodies. Local students even got in on the action, learning about conservation and outdoor stewardship. The ADCNR showed off everything Alabama has to offer, from state parks to incredible hunting opportunities.

Smith Snags the Win!

Tucker Smith, originally from Birmingham, now calling Guntersville home, took home the trophy, hauling in 71 pounds, 6 ounces over three days. Talk about local knowledge paying off! Smith's been racking up wins since high school, and this one's definitely a career highlight. His secret weapon? A ¾-ounce tungsten Picasso football jig with a Yamamoto Yamacraw trailer. Classic! He snagged the victory without relying on fancy forward-facing sonar, either! Take that, technology!

More to Come?

Unified Pros President Danny Groves is hoping to make the Ultimate Angler Championship an annual tradition at Lake Guntersville. Senator Livingston agrees, comparing it to the Masters of golf. Fingers crossed we see this incredible event back on Guntersville next year!

Local Gridiron Star Kicking for a Cause!

An Alabama high school senior is using his football prowess to champion families facing the difficult journey of dementia.

Rob Ashworth's Inspiring Mission

Rob Ashworth, a senior and kicker at The Montgomery Academy, is turning his on-field kicks into crucial support for those touched by memory loss, inspired by his grandmother's struggle with dementia.

Kicking for a Cause: A Touchdown for Respite for All

Rob launched "Kicking for a Cause" earlier this year, a fundraiser benefiting Respite for All, a dementia care ministry that started locally and now serves communities nationwide. This organization offers vital care, support, and community for individuals and families navigating the challenges of dementia.

How It Works: Pledge Your Support!

Through the campaign, folks can pledge a one-time donation or contribute based on Rob's performance each Friday night. Different giving tiers – Gold, Silver, and Bronze – are linked to the type of kick. For example, at the Gold level, donors give a certain amount per extra point, touchback, or even those extra-long field goals! Every dollar goes directly to Respite for All.

A Winning Season On and Off the Field

Rob's fundraising efforts have already topped $5,000 thanks to generous supporters! He's nailed over 27 extra points and booted at least three field goals this season. And the Montgomery Academy Eagles are soaring with a 7-1 record, heading into the playoffs with serious momentum.

Respite for All: Growing Strong

Respite for All began in 2012 at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery as a humble two-day-a-week program. It's blossomed into a national model for dementia care, emphasizing meaningful engagement through activities like art, music, exercise, shared meals, and worship.

More Than Just a Kicker

Rob isn't just a football star; he's deeply involved in campus life. He's the Student Government Association president, a member of the school's state championship soccer team, and an all-around awesome guy!

A Montgomery Institution Changes Hands!

Big news, ChumCity peeps! Chris' Famous Hot Dogs, a downtown Montgomery landmark for 108 years, has been sold. The Katechis family, who've owned and operated it since 1917, are passing the torch. But don't worry, the chili dogs aren't going anywhere!

More Than Just Hot Dogs

Chris' isn't just a place to grab a bite; it's a political and business hub. Situated near the State Capitol, it's seen countless deals hashed out over lunch, happy hour, and even late-night cravings. And let's not forget the music!

A Family Legacy

Founded by Chris Katechis, the legacy continued with his son Theo, Theo's wife Angia, and their son Gus. They've kept the place running, serving up deliciousness and Southern hospitality for over a century. Theo was known for his generosity, helping employees and even providing meals for those in need.

A Century of Alabama History

Three generations of the "First Family of Hot Dogs" - it's amazing! And their secret recipe? Undisclosed, but trust us, it's legendary. You HAVE to try it. Plus, their unique burgers and sides are a must!

A Political Powerhouse

Chris' Hot Dogs has fueled some serious movers and shakers. We're talking Presidents (FDR, Truman, the Bushes), every Alabama governor since 1917, and countless politicians. The walls are a veritable museum of Alabama politics!

Rock 'n' Roll and Country Royalty

Elvis Presley himself grabbed a bite at Chris'. And country legend Hank Williams Sr. was a regular, even inspiring the classic hit, "Hey Good Lookin'," right at the bar!

Business is Booming!

Chris' should be in the Hot Dog Hall of Fame! They cater everything, from conventions to concerts, and even ship their dogs out of state! Remember the 100th-anniversary bash that shut down Dexter Avenue? Epic!

More Than Just a Restaurant

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jimmy Stewart, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald were also patrons. Chris' has seen it all: the Selma-to-Montgomery March, King's ministry, Rosa Parks' historic act.

From the Aegean to Alabama

The journey of Christopher Anastasios Katechis from a small island in Greece to Montgomery is a true American success story. Now, a new chapter begins, but the legend of Chris' Hot Dogs lives on!
