The Alabama Republican Party is throwing down the gauntlet against racial gerrymandering, both in Alabama and across the nation. They're backing the State of Alabama in the Allen v. Milligan redistricting case, currently before the U.S. Supreme Court. ALGOP Chairman John Wahl minced no words, stating the party's brief argues that courts shouldn't mistake partisan results for racial discrimination. “Every voter deserves to be treated as an individual, not as part of a racial or ethnic group," Wahl said. The ALGOP's brief pushes the Supreme Court to uphold Alabama's 2023 congressional map, defending the principles of state control over redistricting, race-neutral governance, and equal protection under the law. They're calling for a return to these core constitutional principles. Wahl also pointed to the Republican Party's historical role in fighting slavery and passing Civil Rights Acts. He contrasted this with what he views as the modern Democratic Party's alleged use of racial divisions for political gain. The Supreme Court also heard arguments in the Louisiana v. Callais case, a key Voting Rights Act case that could significantly impact redistricting rules, potentially reshaping Alabama's future redistricting battles. “There are thousands of Black Republicans across Alabama, and they deserve a voice too,†Wahl emphasized. He condemned the notion that skin color dictates political beliefs as disrespectful and contrary to American ideals. The ALGOP brief warns that using the Voting Rights Act to manipulate racial demographics for political advantage undermines civil rights progress and the foundations of American democracy. Wahl concluded by reaffirming the principle that states, not federal judges, should draw congressional districts. He cautioned against courts mandating districts based on race, arguing it promotes division and political interference, rather than equality. He believes the Supreme Court has a vital chance to protect the American ideal of equality before the law.Alabama GOP Takes a Stand Against Racial Gerrymandering
