Alabama Executes Inmate in Walker County Murder Case

Gregory Hunt, 65, was executed Tuesday evening for the brutal 1988 murder of Karen Lane in Walker County. Hunt had been convicted in 1990 for breaking into Lane's apartment and fatally beating her after a brief relationship.

The Crime and Sentence

Lane suffered approximately 60 injuries in the attack, including around 20 blows to the head, according to reports. Hunt received a death sentence following an 11-1 jury recommendation and has been on death row since his conviction.

Execution Details

Governor Kay Ivey set a 30-hour window for the execution, which ultimately took place at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.

Nitrogen Gas Execution

Hunt chose nitrogen gas as his method of execution before the state even finalized the procedure. This marks Alabama's second nitrogen gas execution this year. Demetrius Terrence Frazier was previously executed by nitrogen gas in February.

Last-Minute Appeal

Hunt recently filed a final appeal, claiming prosecutors misrepresented evidence during his trial. However, the Alabama Attorney General's office dismissed the claim.

Family Statement Expected

A statement from Karen Lane's family is expected following the execution.
