Trump's NIL Commission on Hold?

Remember when President Trump was at the University of Alabama, sparking rumors about an executive order shaking up college sports? The big buzz was a presidential commission on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) reform. Word on the street was Trump would create this via executive order, with legendary coach Nick Saban potentially playing a major role.

Delay in the Play

Hold your horses, folks! It seems that plan is now on pause. Reports indicate Trump's NIL commission is delayed, at least for the moment.

Cruz to the Rescue?

Why the hold-up? Apparently, Senator Ted Cruz is working hard to push through federal legislation on the NIL front. Word is, the expectation is the commission will still be formed, but they are giving Cruz's efforts some room.

Legal Tussle Looming

There's also a huge potential legal settlement in the House that could completely change the NIL game. This settlement could decide whether student-athletes are considered employees, entitling them to a share of the revenue they generate. Basically, it could professionalize college sports.

Saban's Take

Trump seems to be letting the legal process play out before making any big moves. Saban himself has been downplaying the necessity of a formal commission. He's said he doesn't think we need a commission and that we just need folks willing to address the issues and find solutions.

Consultant Saban?

While Saban doesn't think a commission is essential, he's still open to lending a hand. He's said he would be more than happy to be a consultant to anyone who thinks his experience could be helpful to the future of college athletics. Saban also clarified Trump is very interested in college athletics. He also wants to maintain that people go to college to create value for the future in terms of how they develop as people, students, graduation rate, as well as having a balanced, competitive playing field.

The Future of NIL?

So, will Trump's commission eventually materialize? Will Cruz's legislation take center stage? Or will the courts decide the fate of NIL? Only time will tell, ChumCity!
