Madison County Mourns Loss of Sheriff Joe Wheeler Patterson

The ChumCity community is heartbroken to learn of the passing of retired Sheriff Joe Wheeler Patterson, a true local legend known for his honor, compassion, and outstanding leadership. Sheriff Patterson passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the ripe old age of 96, surrounded by his loving family.

A Life of Service

"It's with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired Sheriff Joe W. Patterson. He touched so many lives," shared the Madison County Sheriff’s Department in a heartfelt statement.

Born on April 17, 1929, Sheriff Patterson was a proud Army veteran who served his country bravely during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he dedicated over three decades to law enforcement.

From Patrolman to Sheriff

Sheriff Patterson spent 20 years with the Huntsville Police Department, climbing the ranks from patrol officer to detective and even serving as an administrative assistant to the Mayor's Office. In 1978, he made history by being elected Sheriff of Madison County, a position he held for an incredible 16 years! His time as Sheriff was defined by unwavering leadership and a deep commitment to keeping our community safe.

A Lasting Impact

A graduate of the FBI National Academy, Sheriff Patterson's contributions to Alabama law enforcement were recognized with his induction into the Alabama Police Officers Hall of Fame in 1995.

He always stressed the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect, advising young officers: "Treat everyone you encounter with respect and dignity, regardless of what they have done... treat them like they are your own family.”

Remembered by the Community

Madison County Probate Judge Frank Barger wrote, "Sheriff Joe W. Patterson was a man among men...He made an impact on thousands of lives. His loss leaves a void in our community that no other person is qualified to fill."

Current Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner, who served under Patterson, echoed these sentiments: "Sheriff Patterson gave me a chance... He was a great leader, but more importantly, he was a great man. He will be forever missed."

U.S. Representative Dale Strong also paid tribute, stating: "Sheriff Patterson led with integrity, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to justice. His legacy will live on."

A Family Man

Beyond his impressive career, Sheriff Patterson was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Jane, his sons Wheeler Brent and Jason Scott, and his granddaughters.

He found joy in the simple things, like mowing his lawn and hosting family barbecues.

Honoring His Legacy

Sheriff Patterson's funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Mayfair Church of Christ in Huntsville at 20 p.m.

Sheriff Joe W. Patterson's legacy of integrity, service, and respect will continue to inspire Madison County for years to come.
