Hold on to your hats, ChumCity citizens! Things got a little too real on I-65 the other day. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is on the case after a multi-agency pursuit ended with the arrest of a Georgia murder suspect. Our friends at the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office tell us the drama unfolded on May 18th when Evergreen Police Department tried to chat with 28-year-old Mike Thomas from Stockbridge, Georgia. Turns out, Mr. Thomas was wanted for murder back in Georgia. When officers tried to pull him over on I-65 in Conecuh County, Thomas decided to play "keep away" and took off, leading multiple agencies on a high-speed chase. The pursuit finally came to a screeching halt near mile marker 45 in Baldwin County, thanks to some well-placed spike strips that disabled Thomas’s ride. Not one to give up easily, Thomas allegedly tried to carjack another vehicle stopped in traffic. When that failed, he bolted into the woods. Cue an intense manhunt involving ALEA’s Aviation Unit, the Alabama Department of Corrections K-9 Team (woof!), and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit, amongst others. Eventually, they sniffed him out, cuffed him, and took him to a local hospital for a check-up. The SBI is still digging into all the details, and their findings will be handed over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office.
