Alabama League of Municipalities Celebrates 90 Years!

The Alabama League of Municipalities (ALM) is throwing a party this week, marking a whopping 90 years of supporting our state's cities and towns! That's nine decades of non-stop dedication to Alabama's 465 municipalities.

A Legacy of Support

Since 1935, the ALM has been a go-to resource for cities across the state. They offer legal advice, advocate for local needs in the legislature, and provide tools to help communities thrive. As Executive Director Greg Cochran puts it, they're all about making sure cities have what they need to be vibrant!

Convention and Expo in Huntsville

The anniversary bash is happening at the annual Convention and Expo in Huntsville. Nearly 800 city officials and 200 partner organizations are there, checking out the latest innovations in public safety, water infrastructure, and city planning. Think fire trucks, cutting-edge tech, and smart city solutions!

Local Government: The Foundation

Did you know over 60% of Alabamians live in municipalities? Local governments are the unsung heroes, keeping our streets safe, providing clean water, and ensuring our communities are well-planned. "From the moment you get up till the moment you go to bed, it touches you a million times," Cochran said, highlighting the importance of these everyday services.

Municipal Government Week

Gov. Kay Ivey has officially declared this Municipal Government Week in Alabama, emphasizing the vital role local governments play in our quality of life. She encourages everyone to get involved and recognize the importance of good government at the local level.

Advocating for Local Control

The ALM isn't just about providing services; they're also fierce advocates for municipalities at the state and federal levels. They're fighting to protect local control over taxes, business licenses, and zoning, ensuring cities can shape their own futures.

The Infrastructure Challenge

Cochran also points out the financial challenges cities face, especially when it comes to infrastructure. "Building one mile of a two-lane road costs a million dollars," he said, stressing the importance of grants for roads, water systems, and other critical needs.

Building Vibrant Communities

Looking ahead, the ALM is focused on leadership and collaboration. It's about bringing people together to build consensus on how communities should grow. Each of Alabama's 465 municipalities has its own unique personality and dreams, and the ALM is there to help them become a reality.
