Funding Alabama's Schools: Time for a Change?

Ever wondered how Alabama's public schools get their money? It's a mix of federal (around 10%), local property taxes (21-34%), and the big chunk – the state government (65-75%). For ages, the state's been using the Foundation Program to divvy up the cash based on student numbers. Seems fair, right?

The Problem with "One Size Fits All"

But here's the catch: not all schools are created equal! Imagine School A, way out in the boonies, with kids traveling miles to get there, plus lots of students needing extra help with English and special needs. Then there's School B, in a bustling city, with shorter commutes and fewer kids needing those specific support services.

Under the old system, both schools got funding based on headcount, ignoring School A's unique challenges. School A struggles to support its English Language Learner (ELL) and special needs programs, while School B doesn't need all its transportation funding but can't shift it elsewhere.

Alabama's Making Moves!

We've made progress! Alabama's moved up in national literacy and math rankings, but we can't settle for "okay." It's time to unleash our schools' potential, and a rigid funding system just won't cut it. Flexibility is key!

A New Approach: The RAISE Act

Good news! Our lawmakers are stepping up. The Renewing Alabama’s Investment in Student Excellence Act (RAISE Act) is shaking things up. Schools will now get extra funding – "weights" – based on the number of low-income students, special ed students, English language learners, gifted students, and those in charter schools.

It's a HUGE step, thanks to leaders like Rep. Danny Garrett and Sen. Arthur Orr, who listened to educators and superintendents. And here's the best part: no school will lose a penny! Most will actually gain.

The Future of Alabama Education

We're at a turning point. We can settle for average, or we can give our kids the best. I see incredible things happening in our classrooms. Let's give our schools, teachers, and students the resources they need to shine!
