Get ready, Huntsville! Raytheon just kicked off a massive $115 million expansion of its Redstone Raytheon Missile Integration Facility!

More Space, More Jobs!

This isn't just a little renovation; we're talking about adding 26,000 square feet – boosting the factory's size by over 50%! The best part? This expansion is projected to bring around 185 new jobs to our awesome city! Construction is slated to wrap up next year.

Powerhouse of Defense

The Redstone facility is a crucial hub for integrating missile programs for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, the U.S. Navy, and other important clients. They're already working on nine types of the Standard Missile family, including the SM-3 and SM-6, and will soon be producing even more defense programs, like the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) designed to tackle hypersonic glide vehicles.

Alabama's Pride

"This investment will help us meet the growing needs of our military customers," says Raytheon President Phil Jasper. Governor Kay Ivey also shared her enthusiasm, stating Alabama has always been a leader in innovation, especially in defense. She emphasized Huntsville's role as the home for the "brightest minds in aerospace and defense.”

Huge Impact

Raytheon and its parent company RTX already employ over 2,200 people in Alabama. Secretary of Commerce Ellen McNair emphasized the facility's importance, saying, "The security of our country could one day depend on these technologies, and I’m proud that they come to life in Alabama.” Looks like the Rocket City is set to soar even higher!

CRL Resources Launches Free Training Program

CRL Resources, a consulting powerhouse specializing in business strategy and workforce development, is offering a FREE carpentry/electrical training program this summer! Mark your calendars: June 3rd to July 24th.

What to Expect

"This 8-week program runs Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 20 PM," a CRL insider shared. "We're covering NCCER Core, OSHA 10 for Construction, and NCCER Carpentry/Electrical Level 1 Training... plus, job placement opportunities await at the end!"

Power UP's Mission

Cannon founded Power UP back in 2015 to bring more women into the construction world. Inspired to help folks bounce back after COVID, she envisions this program putting men and women back on the path to success.

"It's about understanding the importance of being in the workforce to help keep costs down," she explained. "It's incredibly rewarding to see people thrive after gaining these skills and building their own careers."

A Ripple Effect

Cannon emphasizes the broader impact: "Training programs lead to employment, which boosts the local economy and benefits our schools. It's a ripple effect! Taking someone off public assistance, breaking cycles, building confidence—it all starts with introducing them to a skilled trade."

The Bigger Picture: Workforce Needs

While Birmingham-Hoover boasts a low unemployment rate (2.8%), that still leaves over 16,000 eligible folks looking for work. Tara Hutchison from the Alabama Department of Labor highlights the need for more resources like workforce training and childcare to further reduce that number.

Hutchison also points out that skill gaps can be a major hurdle, emphasizing the importance of ensuring individuals are qualified for available jobs.

"There could be a multitude of reasons why someone is not working," she said. "We are still seeing childcare and eldercare shortages keeping people out of the workforce. Those who have to care for aging parents or small children.”

Spokane Teacher's Story: A Stark Reminder

In Washington state, known for its progressive vibes, a Spokane classroom became ground zero for controversy. Jacob Knight, a teacher, dared to come out as gay.

Formerly hailed as the "young, straight male teacher," Knight's announcement unleashed a torrent of parental complaints and district investigations. The discrimination and stress were so intense, he nearly succumbed to depression and ultimately resigned. Knight's tale is a harsh reality check: even in seemingly accepting places, LGBTQ+ folks can face serious hostility at work.

LGBTQ+ Workers: Battling More Than Just Bills

According to a myGwork report, almost half of LGBTQ+ workers worldwide struggle with depression. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Knight's story mirrors the complex challenges queer workers face across the U.S., often navigating discrimination, mental health woes, and financial instability. A UCLA Williams Institute report found that LGBTQ+ employees of color are even more likely to face job denials and verbal harassment.

Economic Hardship & The LGBTQ+ Community

Remember the COVID-19 pandemic? The Center for American Progress (CAP) discovered that transgender people were hit hardest by pandemic-related job losses, followed by LGBTQ+ people of color.

Earlier this month, Stefanie Newell, a trans woman, shared her story with The New York Times. She moved from Texas to Denver seeking safety, only to find her income barely covering the high cost of living.

2023 saw a record 615 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the U.S. Texas led the charge with 69 bills, ranging from educational censorship to restrictions on gender-affirming care and public restroom access.

Sex Work: A Complex Reality

For some LGBTQ+ individuals, sex work is more than just a job; it's a way to survive and gain financial independence when facing discrimination. While data is limited, a 2023 California report highlights the harm caused by the war on sex work, particularly for BIPOC individuals.

A 2021 "National Transgender Discrimination Survey" found that about 13% of transgender people in the U.S. have been involved in the sex industry, with that number jumping to 44% for Black trans women.

A Transgender Health study revealed that 42% of young trans women have engaged in sex work, citing "better pay" and lack of other opportunities due to discrimination. However, the study also noted the mental health toll, with 50% experiencing anxiety and depression.

Addison Laczkowski from Cecilia’s Occupational Inclusion Network (COIN) highlights the emotional labor, irregular hours, and financial instability inherent in sex work.

Trans Women of Color: Facing Added Risks

A 2015 study found that 47% of trans people of color have experienced mistreatment or discrimination by police, more than double the rate for their white counterparts (18%). In NYC, undocumented trans women face even greater challenges securing stable housing and employment.

Transgender women, especially trans women of color, are disproportionately affected by violence. The Human Rights Campaign reported that 2021 was the deadliest year on record for transgender and gender non-conforming people in the U.S., with the majority of victims being Black and Latinx trans women.

The Rise of Freelancing & the Gig Economy

UpWork reported that freelancers now make up 38% of the U.S. workforce. COVID-19 dramatically changed the freelancing landscape, with a huge boost in full-time freelancers and side gigs.

Freelancing can offer LGBTQ+ individuals a safe space to express their creativity and control their work environment. Queer entrepreneur Dana Miranda notes that freelancing can bypass education requirements, resumes, and interviews, allowing people to be hired on their merits.

However, freelancing isn't without its downsides. Irregular income, finding new clients, and lack of benefits can lead to financial instability and stress.

Hospitality & Service: A Double-Edged Sword

The hospitality and service industries offer readily available jobs for many LGBTQ+ individuals. A 2022 One Fair Wage study found that nearly one in five hospitality workers identify as LGBTQ+, double the national average.

However, these jobs often come with low wages, unpredictable hours, and the potential for customer harassment. Starbucks faced employee walkouts after managers removed Pride merchandise, highlighting the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Gig Work: Flexibility at a Price

The gig economy, with its promise of quick cash, has become a lifeline for many LGBTQ+ workers. Rideshare and delivery platforms offer adaptable schedules and a seemingly unbiased hiring process.

However, gig work often lacks job security, benefits, and worker protections. In 2021, transgender Uber drivers raised concerns about Postmates displaying their legal names, potentially endangering their safety.

Fighting for Fair Treatment

LGBTQ+ workers, regardless of their profession, continue to advocate for their rights. For Laczkowski, financial stability is key to mental wellbeing. Protect your money, reach out to mental health services, and connect with other workers, they urge.

Prichard Scores Big: Frito-Lay Bringing Jobs!

Get ready, Prichard! Some seriously good news is headed your way. Frito-Lay North America (you know, the folks behind those yummy chips) are setting up a brand-new distribution center right in your backyard.

50 New Jobs on the Horizon!

That's right, by June 2025, this 25,000-square-foot facility is expected to bring around 50 much-needed jobs to the northwestern part of Prichard. This is HUGE for a city that's been working hard to boost its economy.

Local Leaders Celebrate the Investment

"This development underscores the economic vitality of our region," says Mobile Chamber president and CEO Bradley Byrne, emphasizing the importance of logistics and distribution for the area. Prichard Mayor Jimmy Gardner is also pumped, stating he looks forward to the "positive impact this facility will have on our residents and businesses."

An $8 Million Boost

Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood estimates the distribution center represents an $8 million investment in Prichard, which should really ignite the local economy. The project's developer received some tax abatements, but Frito-Lay didn't snag any special incentives.

Rage-Quitting for a Cause: Was it Worth It?

That sweet, sweet taste of freedom when you ditch a job you despise? Unbeatable, right? I've been there. More than once. From ghosting fast fashion gigs that felt morally bankrupt to leaving a soul-crushing "Better Capitalism" newsroom, I've chased my values right out the door.

Sure, there's the initial adrenaline rush. But then reality hits. Like, really hits. Think months of being unhoused, mountains of credit card debt, and raiding retirement savings. Ouch.

Millions of Americans have felt this urge to bail. Remember the "Great Resignation?" But are people still jumping ship? Turns out, fewer are, but a huge chunk are still dreaming of an escape. With my bank account doing the tango and folks stuck in jobs they hate, I started asking: "Was it all worth it?"

So, I chatted with others who took the leap, ditching the corporate grind for something more meaningful.

The High Cost of a Clear Conscience?

Turns out, workplace stress is a monster. Forget just feeling bummed – we're talking physical health problems and even broken relationships!

Liz Bass, a former advertising art director, knows this firsthand. They were pulling insane hours in a cutthroat industry, all while fighting against harmful stereotypes. "I was not sleeping. I was crying all the time," they said. Even "mental health days" turned into 14-hour workathons!

Rex Thomas, an ex-SpaceX engineer, echoes this sentiment. Sure, the salary seemed good, but it was below industry standard. They described a cult-like atmosphere, preying on insecurities and pushing workers to their limits. Free meals and onsite everything couldn't mask the exploitation.

The takeaway? High salaries often come with a Faustian bargain: your time, your well-being, your soul.

Taking the Plunge: Freelance Freedom (with a Catch)

Liz left their corporate job to freelance. At $120/hour, they are now making their own rules and choosing their clients.

The big catch? Liz had the privilege of savings to cushion the transition. Many of us aren't so lucky. We're stuck in a paycheck-to-paycheck loop, dreaming of a better life but unable to afford the escape.

Values-Aligned Work: Worth the Pay Cut?

Beck Levin started at Facebook, but the toxic culture and ethical compromises led them to the nonprofit sector. While they found fulfillment and appreciation, they eventually faced a pay cut.

Beck says, “It’s not an easy thing when you’re working for the literal devil, but work there six more months so you could save money… just because you never know what’s going to happen.”

Beyond the Numbers: The Real Worth

Thomas is pursuing music production, even if it means dipping into savings. Speaking to these three individuals, I've learned that the "worth" of leaving the 9-to-5 isn't just about money. It's about agency, freedom, and aligning your work with your values.

Sure, the financial reckoning can be brutal. But the gratitude for taking control of our lives? That's priceless.
